Holiday Parties AKA Tulle Can Be Your Friend

Gowns, sparkles, champagne... It's holiday season. One of my self-goals is to attend a glamorous traditional black tie party for the holidays just once. But until then, I'll just dream up some possibilities and bundle up instead in my duck boots and thick gloves as I travel out for Chinese food on this cold, wintery night.

If I did have a party to go to, I would probably wear one of the following outfits (we're still in fairytale land here). Interested in some ideas for your own holiday party? Scroll down.

For my ladies whom gowns are just not their thing, instead of a traditional menswear inspired tuxedo, consider the new up-in-comer: the jumpsuit. This is not the traditional jumpsuit as seen by Elvis or pilots. Instead, it's a sophisticated take on a traditional two piece look. Plus, it will create the same lines as a dress instead of a shirt and pants so it's a step up from office wear (in my opinion).

Jumpsuit- Valentino
Blazer- Stella McCartney
Satchel- Cambridge Satchel Company
Watch- Michael Kors
Mules- Oscar de la Renta

If wearing a gown is a fashion risk for you, take a bigger one by pairing it with a pair of pants underneath. Not only will you be warmer than your co-party-goers in dresses, but the mixture of patterns and textures will really become complimentary.

Beaded gown- Valentino
Earrings- Tom Binns
Pants- Herve Leger
Bomber jacket- Elizabeth and James
Purse- Chanel
Mesh ankle boot- Oscar de la Renta

If you do decide to wear a gown, and aren't sure how to or are uncomfortable, remember to always keep it simple. You can never go wrong with a traditional, form-fitting cut and a solid color. And don't feel like you have to wear heels!

Tulle gown- Notte by Marchesa
Satin blazer- Helmut Lang
Velvet clutch- Saint Laurent
Flats- Hermes

Some other of my favorite options (seriously, you can't go wrong with any of them):

Leather, lace, and tulle gown- Valentino
Two-tone sequin and tulle halter gown- Alice and Olivia
Cheetah metallic lace gown- Milly
Pilgrim beaded gown- Valentino

Black sparkle clutch- Anya Hindmarch
Gold clutch- Louboutin
Sparkly belt- Paul & Joe
Studs- Chanel
Nude pumps- Manolo Blaknik

Stealing from the Guys: The Men of Love Actually

With the arrival of my mom's Christmas presents yesterday, and the completion of my own Christmas shopping, I can finally say that I'm officially feeling the season. We all have holiday traditions. One of mine is watching Love Actually with my mom. While I can't be home for Christmas this year, I can still kind of celebrate in tradition with this holiday version of "Stealing from the Guys." And maybe next time I watch it I will dress up channeling one of the characters... Someone call my mom and ask if that's okay if we incorporate this into our tradition.

Do you have any holiday traditions? Are you excited for Christmas? Or do you just think it's overrated?

Daniel (played by Liam Neeson): Since your spouse just died, it's okay to keep it somber this holiday with blacks and grays. Just know that at the end of the mourning period is going to be a great new romance (hello, Claudia Schiffer).

Black coat- Reed Krakoff
Scarf- Christopher Fischer
Sweater- Dolce & Gabbana
Skinny jeans- J Brand
Boots- DV by Dolce Vita

Billy Mack (played by Bill Nighy): You don't have to be an aging rocker to dress like one... Okay, I'm not even sure what that means, but everyone loves Billy Mack and his brightly colored wardrobe.

Boots- Frye
Dress- Duro Olowu
Chain- Berricle
Rings- Lulu Frost & Macys
Headphones- Master & Dynamic

Harry (played by Alan Rickman): Naughty, naughty Harry. The one thing I hope you're noticing by now is that British men seem to have a fondness for turtlenecks.

Glasses- Ogi
Loafers- Salvatore Ferragamo
Blazer- Yoox
Turtleneck sweater- Valentino
Pants- Carolina Herrera

Mark (played by Andrew Lincoln): Obviously, this is my favorite outfit, and as a teenager, Mark was the guy I would have fallen for. While this version is a little brighter than dreary Mark's, it still has the colorblocking and go-to (you guessed it) turtleneck.

Colorblock cardigan- Peter Pilotto for Target
Jeans- 7 For All Mankind
Flats- Charles Phillip Shanghai
Turtleneck- Uniqlo

After this post I am definitely reconsidering my turtleneck stance.

How to Rock a Sweatshirt Without Looking Frumpy

Sweatshirts AKA a type of sweater made from thick cotton jersey... AKA: One of my favorite things.

It's officially sweatshirt season!!!! This means that all I pretty much do is lounge around the house in old sweatshirts and possibly not much else. Thankfully sweatshirts have come a long way since the oversized ones my mom bought me in the nineties (I still vividly remember my mom dressing me in only sweatshirts, jeans, and sneakers--this was clearly before I realized that you could wear sweatshirts over other clothes if you wished. After that, I refused to leave the house without putting something underneath despite my mother's protest to this idea).

I wanted something with a fun print, but still a grown-up vibe? (Hopefully). I'd like to think this is also a little street style and a little rock n roll (black pants and red pumps= the ultimate).

Cuff- Chanel
Purse- Etsy
Floral sweatshirt- MSGM
Pumps- Manolo Blahnik
Skinny jeans- Al Duca D'Aosta
Distressed denim jacket- Levis Vintage Denim
Scarf- Valentino

An easy way to break up (or add warmth) to a set? A cropped sweatshirt.

Sweatshirt- Alexander Wang
Top- Lover
Pencil skirt- Lover
Crossbody bag- Saint Laurent
Watch- Nixon
Sneaks- Kate Spade

Thankfully, sweatshirts have updated themselves enough to be worn to the office now too. You could go with a classic solid colored one or one with a little piazza like gems and bedazzles.

White cocoon coat- Cedric Charlier
Embellished sweatshirt- Rebecca Taylor
Skirt- Lover
Foldover clutch- Moyna
Pumps- Saint Laurent

We all know I'm a fan of mixing prints. So mixing a printed sweatshirt with a plaid shirt (to be worn underneath of course), I'm totally there along with a pop of color and a leather jacket.

Sweatshirt- J.Crew
Plaid shirt- Mango
Skinny jeans- H&M
Purse- Burberry
Heels- Schutz
Quilted leather jacket- Kay Michaels

Stealing from the Guys: Louboutin Tattoo Parlor

The idea of a tattoo has become more and more appealing lately. While I don't plan on running out to the tattoo parlor any time soon, I do plan on eying Louboutin's Tattoo Parlor a little bit more. The designer has taken traditional tattoo art, kois and dragons, as well as a twist with lobsters and, my favorite, a grasshopper.

Henri Tatto Criquet Flat

The predominate male collection does contain one pair for women. However, while the majority of tomboychic style approved shoes are made for men, they start at a size 39 (US size 6). So, if you can wear a men's six or up... I say go for it!

Let's Talk About the Sneaker Trend

In case you've been living under a rock for the past oh... few months, the sneakers with nonathletic clothing as been all over fashion blogs, social media, and street style platforms. I, myself, love the it. Any time fashion meets comfort, I'm there; especially if it means one less thing I have to take off for the gym.

I can understand if you're a little hesitant. Let's be honest, it could easily be done bad, or even worse, boring.

However, I simultaneously find this trend fascinating because only a few years a go a "good" outfit would have been considered "bad" with sneakers (or as we call em back home, tennis shoes). It also, in some ways, brings me back to high school... But I suggest stepping out of the high school zone box.

Still not convinced? Or even better, all ready trend-ho? Then check out these outfit ideas for a little (or little more) inspiration.

This outfit could easily be worn running errands on the weekend or, in some cases for a few special people, to the office. It's sporty, but chic enough to look like you tried.

Scarf- Theory
Watch- Daniel Washington
High top sneakers- Adidas by Stella McCartney
Silk pants- Erdem
Sweater- T by Alexander Wang
Denim jacket- Rag & Bone

I'd like to think of this one as super comfy--as in nothing's comfier than sweats and tennis shoes comfy. However, it also has a certain street style feel. I'd wear this outfit every day of the week.

Coat- McQ Alexander McQueen
Shirt- American Eagle
Vest- Topshop
Sweatpants- Nike
Clutch- Bottega Veneta
Sneakers- Nike

Holiday parties are just around the corner, so I wanted to include an outfit idea for the super bold--or at least the ones that hate wearing high heels during formal occasions. I think you can do it... it's all about confidence.

Foldover Satchel- Zimmermann
Dress- Lulu and Co
Beanie- Acne Studio
Watch- Adidas
Fishnet tights- Berkshire
Sneakers- Nike
Faux fur coat- DKNY

And last, but not least, something definitely office worthy or at least date night worthy.

Velvet blazer- Theory
Blouse-Saint Laurent
Sequin pencil skirt (yeah, I'm still digging sequins)- BCBG
Bag- Valentino
Sneakers- Nike

Hello Holiday Glitz

Now that Halloween has past and the first layer of frost was seen this morning, fashion season dictates the arrival of one of our long-lost friends: sequins. There's something about the arrival of the holidays that makes people reminiscent of turkey legs, red lipstick, and a sequin cocktail dress. My theory about this is irrelevant; however, I'm getting excited to re-welcome the colder weather with a few sparkly additions. While I may not be ready to head out fully shining, there are a few other ways to dip my (and your) toes into the now classic holiday trend.

I don't know how many times I've said it and will continue to say it, but accessories are an easy and guilt-free way to get involved in any trend.

My first sequin look is probably the most truest to my heart and, therefore, the most tomboy chicest. Sequin heeled pumps? Check. Black skinny jeans? Check. Sporty tee? Check. To make it a little more chic and modern, however, I paired it with a long coat and a quilted purse.

I have been loving the sequin on tees/sweatshirts street-style trend that has slowly been gaining momentum. So of course, I loved this sequin sweatshirt (also check out this t-shirt on my Pinterest that I'm dying to make). For whatever reason, (I really like black denim) I paired it with these ripped jeans and bright red socks. I added another black backpack, this cool wrap watch by Tory Burch, and some chunky boots.

As usual, I also try to incorporate something that's a little more outside my comfort zone. This time, it was this sequin plaid skirt by Saint Laurent. I loved the idea of pairing it with another plaid (well, I guess, flannel) shirt. Since it's getting colder, I added a deep-v sweater over top and a biker jacket. I wanted to play with prints even more, so I loved the idea of adding these argyle tights. Of course this was turning into something psuedo-punk that I would have worn back in high school, so I paired it with some booties and a beanie.

Lastly, is the simplest and probably easiest way to incorporate sequins. I could see this look being worn on casual Fridays in the office or to run errands. I loved these sequin brogues and knew, even though I already had an outfit based on shoes, that I needed to at least add them in one look. I then paired them with a more classically preppy sweater/shirt combo and slim khaki pants. To keep everything clean, I added a neutral jacket and Chanel bag.

Keep your eyes posted, and I'm sure on your next online shopping binge, you'll start seeing more and more sequins as well.

Maison Martin Margiela Jazz Club Review

I have wanted to try one of the Maison Martin Margiela Replica scents for some time. Each one sounds very interesting, but I finally decided on the Jazz Club (the fact that the boy and I were putting in massive amounts of time watching Boardwalk Empire might also have some play into this decision).

Sephora describes Jazz Club as, "imortal[izing] the masculine and exhilarating ambiance of a Brooklyn jazz club." Pretty catchy, eh? The bottle itself is gorgeous. I've never owned a fragrance quite like it. The label was printed on 100% cotton and are reminiscent of clothing tags. Sephora claims, that these labels "resemble the tags used on the clothing and accessories for the 'REPLICA' couture collection."

Jazz Club notes:
Pink Pepper, Primofiore Lemon, Neroil Oil, Rum Absolute, Clary Sage Oil, Java Vetiver Oil, Tobacco Leaf Absolute, Vanilla Bean, and Styrax Resin.

Overall: Unfortunately, this fragrance was just a little too strong for me. I thought it would be perfect if it had coconut in it and even considered buying some cheap coconut spray to go with it, but I was afraid it would still be a little too bold. If you like bold, masculine fragrances; however, this is a winner.

'REPLICA' Jazz Club as well as their five other fragrances are available at Sephora for $125.

Latest Obsession: Green & Leopard

Green has always been one of my favorite colors and so has leopard print. I don't know where this latest obsession has sprung from other than the fact that I think green and leopard print look good together--it's unexpected and chic. When shopping lately, I've also been thinking of ways to incorporate this color scheme more into my wardrobe. And here are some ideas for yours:

I love the idea of an iconic green coat paired with leopard pants. Basically, this screams, We will never go out of style! To keep it classic, pair it with an ivory draped blouse, Chelsea boots, and a classic black satchel.

Of course you'll have to pry my boyfriend jeans off my cold, dead legs. While I usually just steal my own boyfriend's jeans, I loved this pair by J.Crew. I also wanted this look to be a little bit more rock n roll so, of course leopard print is an automatic go. This time, I loved the idea of a leopard tank with a blazer layered overtop. I'm also in love with another trend right now--mules. Picking a green pair; however, really makes this outfit pop. Since I didn't want to take away from the color combo, I picked a basic black clutch to pull everything together.

And lastly, I decided to pick an office-appropriate version. I started with these gorgeous velvet green pants by Emilio Pucci and paired it with a simple white blouse (with black bow of course). Since we're hanging out in the cubicles, I wanted a somewhat matching green blazer to pull everything together. An easy way to bring in prints to any outfit is with your shoes. I especially love the idea of a classic pointed-toe pump (for the office). I finished the outfit off with a classic camel-colored jacket, gold watch, and furry purse.

What do you think, so on-trend or absolutely dreadful?

Last Minute Halloween Costumes

I don't know about you, but Halloween has crept on me this year. I just bought a bag full of candy (for myself, not trick or treaters) and made some "bloody" dagger cupcakes (Instagramed). But that's pretty much as far as I've gotten this year, unless you count the recent hours I've been putting in lately on Hulu watching Elvira and nineties horror films...

So what's a girl supposed to do at the last minute?

Don't fear, here are a few Tomboy Chic approved costumes just dying (get it?) to be worn.

Cara Delevingne

My recent Cara-DKNY post got me thinking about how great a Cara Halloween costume would be. Think about it, you get to wear sportswear and make funny faces all night--I'm in.

If you're not already blessed with long hair, consider a long blond wig. Otherwise, don't forget to bush up those brows and watch a smoky eye tutorial, or go crazy with some eyeliner. I think her most well-known look is her sporty one, so grab your jersey, some leggings, and boots. Finish it off with a beanie.

Vacationer

A stereotypical vacationer (IE: vacationer from hell) is something I've wanted to do for years. Grab a Hawaiian shirt, some high waisted "Mom" jeans, and a fanny pack and you're basically good to go. Up the ante, with some jelly sandals, sunscreen, and a camera (or in this case, a camera purse).

Bonus props for going as a zombie vacationer.

Evil Kenevil.

I love the feeling of the fresh air on my face and the wind blowing through my hair

Let's face it, there's nothing more badass than getting to wear a cape and jumping over things. If you're afraid of heights in real life, don't worry because Halloween is all about facing your fears and becoming the king (or in our case, queen) of daredevil jumps.

Start by grabbing a cape and a jumpsuit. Finish the look off with a helmet (safety first guys), boots, and a patriot touch like a flag pin. Don't forget to grab a toy motorcycle... Just in case anyone wants to see a few tricks.

Dog Pageant Contestant

Really, this costume is just an excuse to watch Best in Show on repeat. But, honestly, nothing is more fun than being a character on Halloween, and I love the idea of being an intense animal-grooming pageant fanatic. (Okay, I guess you can be as fanatic as you'd like).

You're going to want to show off your love for dogs in subtle ways--a sweater for example, or maybe some socks, and of course there's always jewelry. Next, go for the pageant attire--don't act like you haven't seen them on Thanksgiving after the parade... Think blazers and khaki pants along with a nice pair of loafers. Lastly, grab your favorite pooch--I love the idea of a stuffed animal (hey, he was sold to you perfectly made) and a leash.

Well, that's all folks. I hope you have a wonderful, candy-filled Halloween!

Let's Talk About the Calvin Klein Underwear Revival

Sometimes you forget about old trends. One for instance, was something one of my students brought up the other week: girls wearing boxers under their baggy jeans. She said she hated the look, but I remember loving it (no surprise right?).

Ever since then, I've been seeing a reoccurring image throughout the Internet: young women posing in their Calvin Klein briefs (cue in images of Mark Wahlberg) with a matching sports bra.

I must admit that I love the look--it's so nineties sportswear; it's so nineties hip hop--that whole slightly tough vibe of hanging out in your briefs.

I'm not one for matching her undies and bra, but this look as got me thinking that matchy-matching isn't so a bad idea.

What's Under Your Clothes?

Calvin Klein Sports Bra
Calvin Klein Underwear

What do you think? Do you like the trend, or hate it?

Drop: Cara Delevingne DKNY

Earlier this month (the 15th to be exact), everyone's favorite tomboy model, Cara Delevingne, released her fifteen-piece capsule collection for DKNY. Vogue describes it as something, "which errs on the side of streetwear and includes crop tops, a sweat/jump suit, tanks, tees, hoodies, track pants, and a cropped leather bomber jacket."

What is a capsule collection? I asked myself the same thing. A capsule collection is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that will not go out of style.

Cara also said that she wanted the items to be worn by any shape, style, and male/female. Here at Tomboy Chic, we love unisexy (so go Cara!).

The items in the collection range $70 (for a sports bra)-$735 (for the killer leather jacket). As of right now, if you buy directly from the website, they are also giving out a limited edition tote with any Cara D X DKNY purchase.

Have you checked out the collection yet? What do you think?

Quick Review- Memoirs of a Beatnik

As soon as the sun starts setting later in the evening and the air gets warmer, I reach for a book by one of the Beats. Something about the change from spring to summer always brings adventures on the road, by the sea, or even in the humid and small apartments of New York City. Memoirs of a Beatnik by Diane di Prima took me on a few adventures-- sexual as well as around and outside of the city. While exploring sexual adventures,"the scene," and what's "cool," we watch di Prima and her friends discover themselves through sexual awakening, discoveries in new arts and new friends, jobs (or lack of), and to some degree their families (ie: what's expected of them). Reading this reminded me of my own self-discovery into adulthood--the joys of your own sexuality, stepping out on your own, and living each day through your art.

Memoirs of a Beatnik is a good read for those who love Beat literature--especially those interested in the era before the term beat was defined. However, it may not be the type of memoir-memoir that some are hoping it to be (just read the various comments on Goodreads). It's also not a PG-13 rated type of book--there is a lot of vividly described sex scenes which perhaps take up about half the book. That being said, it is a quick and vivid read, a feminist account of coming into one's own, and an inside look at the scene before it was really dubbed the scene.

Lounging Around

If I could walk around in my house naked I would; however, I live in an apartment complex with many neighbors, large sliding glass doors, and windows facing towards other windows. On hot summer nights (and let's be honest, some hot summer days), I dress as close to being naked as possible--boxer shorts and tanks. This has been my go-to home/sleep combo since I was a tween with braces, and there's still nothing like it.

More and more, I'm finding myself looking for more home and comfy, warm weather friendly lounge clothes. Let's be honest, what's better than super short boxers and tees? Not too much in my opinion.

What do you lounge around in?

It's a Nice Day for a White Blazer

Lately, on Pinterest, I've been pinning more looks with one cleverly styled item--the white blazer.

The first time I tried to rock a white blazer, I ended up looking more like a relator at an open house instead of a model off duty. I'm afraid I've been a little ashamed to try the white blazer again, but with all this inspiration lately, I just might have to dig it out from the back of the closet.

Feelin' Peachy

One of my favorite colors is peach, and every spring without fail, beauty gurus and fashionistas start raving about what color? Peach. It shows up every where--the color that everyone forgot just like the warmer weather.

Don't think the peach trend is for you? Think again. The color peach covers a wider spectrum range than you'd think; plus, it's an easy neutral color to add to your wardrobe.

For this first look, I keep things a little bit more rock n roll. The off-the-shoulder shirt can be worn under or over the sheer blouse. And the classic black skinnies give it a Parisian flair. Keeping with the theme, I paired this outfit with boots, a wide brim fedora, and a pigeon claw ring. I also added my favorite accessory as of late: a watch. Keeping with the beauty theme, I thought a nice peach blush would pull everything together.

This look is definitely a little stealing-from-your-preppy-southern-boyfriend. Or so I'd like to think. It started with the peach blazer, but pairing it with a solid color pant would just be a waste of a good blazer. So I paired it with these fun, tropical print pants. I didn't want a solid shirt underneath, but a bit of texture with this lacy tank and multi-layered necklace. I loved pairing everything with these chambray Keds and could definitely imagine this outfit with a nice peach lipstick.

I love the idea of pairing an easy, laid-back sweater with distressed shorts (totally chic!).  Instead of my instinct, which where a pair of gladiator sandals, I decided to mixed it up with a nice leopard print heel--which will look amazing with the peachy-coral nail polish. To keep things summery and easy-going, I decided a nice friendship bracelet would be a girl's best accessory in this case.

Spring 14 Jean Trends

While there's still no spring flowers out around here yet, there are a few new trends popping up daily. The big one I've noticed? Denim. Ripped, patched, rolled, and even tied. Straight, flared, and yep, still boyfriends.

I love jeans and therefore I'm always looking for an amazing new pair.

Here's a few ways to style your new favorite style.

Ripped:
Every summer they're back... ripped demin. And I love it. It's an easy way to make any outfit look more edgy.

Tank- Jawbreaking // Jeans- Pull and Bear // Scarf- Moschino Cheap & Chic // Sports bra- Adidas by Stella McCartney // Wedge sneakers- Ash // Clutch- Nine West // Rose bracelet- Oscar de la Renta // Twist bracelet- Mulberry

Patched:
Patches have been everywhere. I must admit, I kind of love it. I went for a slightly bohemian, laid-back look.

Bodysuit- Maison Martin Margiela // Jeans- Junya Watanabe // Cardigan- Rebecca Taylor // Boots- Rag & Bone // Necklace- Chicastic // Bag- Burberry

Tied:
The best thing about these jeans is that if you're going for the whole 90s vibe you don't have to keep re-tying your shirt sleeves around your waist. Seriously, that was 90s Carey's least favorite thing (and 00s Carey's never do).

Obviously it would have been super easy to make this a Tie from Clueless sort of outfit. But I didn't want to go extreme 90s--just a little with some updates.
Crop top- Topshop // Jeans- DKNY for Opening Ceremony // Headband- Accessorize.com // Bangles- Ashley Pittman // Purse- Mulberry // Flats- Jimmy Choo

Rolled:
With rolled jeans, it's easy to automatically go the retro route. While I considered it, I wanted to incorporate another new trend: the flower shirt. Of course, I can't just have it too matchy or too girly, so I paired it with a checkered scarf and western-inspired boots (but not too western). What do you think?
Shirt- Gap // Jeans- Frame Denim // Fedora- Rocket448 // Scarf- Neil Barrett // Purse- Joie // Booties- Swell

Stealing from the Guys: Our Man

All Is Lost

Yesterday I finally saw All Is Lost. The cinematography was beautiful, and the movie was intense. But of course I absolutely loved Redford's sailor costume. It was very simple--either a short sleeve or long sleeve navy tshirt with khaki pants--however, it had some bohemian aspects--a gorgeous turquoise ring, thread bracelet, and leather bracelet--that I found very interesting.

Here's the tomboy chic way:

Aside from Redford being Redford (ie: awesome and adorable) and an awesome outfit, All Is Lost was a fantastic movie and while it started a little slow ... the ending was anything but.
